 </p><br><br><p>The notice of the Bookham Common Survey appeared in the Lond
 on Naturalist for 1941. The LNHS had been carrying out a survey of Limpsfie
 ld Common a relatively dry site on Lower Greensand. But transport and other
  difficulties during wartime meant this came to a halt.</p><p>The decision 
 was made to turn instead to a study of the flora and fauna of Bookham Commo
 n, Surrey, an area of about 380 acres, two miles west of Leatherhead, and l
 ying just within the boundary of the Society’s area. More than half was cov
 ered by the typical semi-natural pedunculate oakwood of clay soils; the res
 t was a wet grassland, with local rush communities and hawthorn and bracken
  fringing the woodland. There were a number of ponds with about three acres
